Mealworms

We have mealworms in our class. They live in a vial with wheat germ. They eat sweet potatoes and apples. They molt, which means they break out of their skin and shed because they are too big. Then they will turn into pupas that look like mummies. Then they are going to turn into Darkling Beetles.

Pumpkin Day!!!!

On Friday it was a special day because it was pumpkin day! We did a lot of activities with pumpkins. We counted the seeds by groups of 10 and we wrote adjectives about our pumpkins. We also watched the movie; It’s the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown. We measured the circumference of our pumpkins using a string and a yard stick. We also figured out the weight of our pumpkins by using a scale. We made pumpkin pie in a bag too. We had to bang the graham crackers to crush them. We squished and squashed the filling in a bag using our hands.

Veteran's Day

On Veterans Day Assembly we sang You’re Grand Old Flag to the veterans. We said the pledge in the gym with the whole school. We had two veterans come into our classroom. One was from the Vietnam War and he was in the army. The other veteran was from the Marines.

Learning About Bees

Here are some neat facts we have learned about honey bees:

1. There is only one Queen in a hive. (Kevin and Alyssa)
2. Bees will sting you if you wave your arms. (Jovanni)
3. Worker bees have stingers. (Jeremy)
4. Worker bees are only girls and Drones are only boys. (Josie)
5. Yellow jackets can sting you more than once. (Tommy, Mia and Daniel)
6. Queen bees can fly the highest. (Sebastian)
7. Queen bees are the biggest in the hive. (Sarina)
8. You can pet Drone bees because they don’t have stingers. (Emily)
9. There are 1,000 Workers, 100 Drones and 1 Queen in each hive. (Alan)
10. Honeybees make honey in their hives. (Jessica)
11. The Drones help the Queen bee in the hive. (Dominic)
12. Worker bees collect pollen to make honey. (Kayla)
13. The Queen lays all the eggs. (Vinnie)
14. Bee keepers have to wear a special suit to make sure they don’t get stung. (Sharon)
15. A smoker machine is used to calm down the bees so the bee keeper can get the
honey out of the hive.

Fire Safety

We went into a big trailer with the firefighters. They taught us how to get down on the floor if you hear the smoke alarm. First you feel the door. If the door is cold then peek to see if there is smoke. If the door is hot DON'T open the door. If you see smoke put a blanket or something else under the door to keep out the smoke. Then if you are on the second floor yell for help and throw your toys out the window to get someones attention. If you are on the first floor you need to jump out of your window and go to your family's meeting area. Mine is at our neighbor's house (Sarina) and mine is at the tree in my front yard (Emily).

Apple Day

We had our Apple Day last week. We did several fun activities all involving apples. First, we wrote adjectives about our apples we brought in. Some of the adjectives we came up with were juicy, red, bumpy and smooth. Then we read a story about the little red house with no windows and doors. There was a secret at the end of the story. Maybe you know the secret: what is hidden in the middle of every apple? Our class also used water colored paints to paint our apple trees for our apple number stories. Then we tasted six different apples. Our class voted on gala apples for our favorite taste. Miss Herrmann, helped us make apple chains at the end of the day. We learned about the steps to grow an apple. First a seed needs to be planted, that turns into an apple tree, then a blossom grows and a bee comes to pollinate the apple blossom. Then the blossom turns into an apple. We had a great apple day!!!

Broken Arm Day

We have two students in our class who have broken arms. We decided it would be fun to have a broken arm day and see what it is like having a broken arm. A lot of us thought it was tough and some of us decided to change our broken arm to the other arm so it was easier to write. We were all very creative with our casts. Some of us even used an old sock for our pretend cast.

We held a Mother's Day Tea in our classroom to celebrate how much we love our moms! Our moms came and we welcomed them to our classroom. We did a Reader’s Theater performance called The Mother’s Day Surprise. Some of us read a Mother’s Day poem and other people read the book, Love You Forever. Earth Day

On Earth day, we celebrated our Earth because we love our planet. We went to an assembly about Earth Day and recycling. We learned that some pants are made out of corn. Miss Frandsen’s sister, Gena came in and read a book called Milo and the Mystery of the Golden Rock. Our class made bird feeders out of pine cones and peanut butter. We also made recycled paper out of newspaper and we put seeds in it.

A Visit to Washington D.C.

Since, we have been learning about our country's government we decided we wanted to take a pretend trip to our nations capital, Washington D.C. Miss Frandsen gave us a plane ticket and a gumball during our pretend flight. When we arrived we found out that some very important monuments were missing in the capital. Miss Frandsen put us into three groups and we had to draw the Washington Monument, Lincoln Memorial and the White House. We drew all three places after we did some research about the specific place. We all hope one day we can go see the real places in Washington D.C.

Science

We just finished our science unit about motion and balance. We did several experiments involving motion and balance. Our final experiment was to make a roller with a small group. We used a sphere and foam roller pieces to make amazing "roller coasters." We had a blast!

Writing Letters

We wrote letters to friends or family we were not going to see over the holidays. It was so fun writing the letters and the addressing the envelopes. Then we walked to the nearest mailbox and dropped our letters inside.

Gingerbread Houses

We made gingerbread houses. We used graham crackers and frosting to make the houses. Then we decorated them with all types of candy. They were beautiful to look at and yummy to eat!

Kwanzaa

We learned about Kwanzaa. People put corn on a mat called a Mkeka for how many children are in the family. They use a candle holder called a Kinera. The Kinera has eight candles. There are three greens, three reds and one black. Kwanzaa starts on December 26th and ends on January 1st. Happy Kwanzaa!

The Native American Suprise

A Native American man came to our school. He showed us a lot of cool and neat things. He brought a real tepee and set it up in the gym. We learned that they wore wolf fur and hides to chase the buffalo off the cliffs. He shared with us that they couldn’t talk to other people who were not in their family because it was considered rude. They drank out of buffalo bladders, buffalo horns and buffalo stomachs. We also learned that they burned buffalo poop in their fires because it helped keep in the fire burning. We thought he was awesome!

Native American Paintings

We made Native American paintings in class. We are learning a lot about Native Americans. We used their symbols for our writing. We wrote legends about Native Americans. Our class, used paper bags for our stories. Then we wrote the stories in our words.

On Halloween we had a parade. Everyone lined up and walked around the school with their costumes on. At our Halloween party we played a game that you stuck an eye on a monster. We played mummy bowling. Our class made a craft that looked like a pumpkin fence. Also, we played toss the rings on the tag pole pumpkin. Our class played Halloween BINGO and we won gloves, cauldrons, socks and spider rings. We all had lot of FUN!

Pumpkin Day

Last Friday we had pumpkin day! We took out all of the pumpkin seeds from our class pumpkin. There were 230 seeds in all. We made pumpkin pie in a bag. It was fantastic! The whole class made 3D pumpkins. We also wrote describing words about our pumpkins from Goebberts. Then we wrote a paragraph about our pumpkins!

Mealworms

We have mealworms in our classroom. When they came they were mealworms larva. They live in wheat germ in a vial. Mealworms eat small pieces of sweet potatoes. After they are larvae they turn in to a pupa. Then they turn into a Darkling beetle. Mealworm larvae have six legs ,two eyes and two antennas. We use our magnifying glasses to see them closer. We have a scientist book where we write observations and draw pictures.

Goebbert's Pumpkin Farm

We went to the Goebbert’s Pumpkin Farm last Thursday! Our class got to pick out pumpkins. We put them in a bag and we also got some gourds. The hayride was fun for the whole class! We saw sheep, lambs, pigs, chickens, rabbits, goats, peacocks, llamas, bees and ducks. We also played in their two mazes. At Goebbert’s there is a pumpkin eating dinosaur that loves to eat pumpkins. The dinosaur also blew smoke at us too! We had SO much fun at Goebbert’s today.

On October 14th our class went outside to a trailer. We wached a video about EDITH, which stands for exit drill in the home. Then we went to another room. A firefighter talked to us. He told us how to get out of the house if there is a fire. We got to praitce getting out by pretending we were sleeping, a pretend fire alarm, and getting out of the window.
